A Man Hauling on a Rope
A youthful work by the artist, datable to c.1902-1903, the present sheet may have been a preparatory sketch for an unpublished illustration for Ver Sacrum, the journal of the Vienna Secession. A figure closely related in pose appears in Blauensteiner’s colour woodcut Zerlumpte Frau im Schnee (‘Ragged Woman in the Snow’), which appeared as a full-page illustration in Ver Sacrum in 1903.
Provenance: The estate of the artist, with the Nachlass Blauensteiner estate stamp (not in Lugt) on the verso.
