Edouard VUILLARD

Datable to around 1920, the present sheet was drawn in the residential suburb of Vaucresson, west of Paris. Vuillard’s close friends, the Belgian-born art dealer Jos Hessel and his wife Lucy, had bought a villa at Vaucresson in 1917, and the artist and his mother began renting a small house in the same town the following year. Vuillard produced numerous drawings and pastels at Vaucresson, and in particular of the well-tended garden outside his home and studio.
