Literature: Four finely carved panels, from an Italian late Renaissance building. Originating in Italy and superseding the Gothic style, the Renaissance encompassed all aspects of design, architecture, painting and sculpture incorporating elements of ancient Greek and Roman art. The carved equestrian panels are reminiscent of ancient Roman sarcophagus military reliefs in technique and style. The sculptor undoubtedly was exposed to the many ancient reliefs being found throughout the Renaissance period in Italy.
