The Roman painter Piero Pizzi Cannella soon turned away from an early naturalistic representation, but never went over to complete non-objectivity. If at the beginning of the 1980s the spatial references still appeared in the form of a cupboard, a chest of drawers or a jewelry box, he later dispensed with them and let his preferred motifs appear in a kind of suspended state. More and more Pizzi Cannella got rid of the superfluous and devoted himself to the essential. Along with amphoras / vases, lizards, fans, dry flowers and tiles, the dress and pieces of jewelry are among the most popular objects that have animated Pizzi Cannella's works for decades. Both in his paintings and in the works on paper, his work in layers can be observed. The texture of the image carrier, a particularly heavy paper with a strong structure, has a decisive effect on the application of paint, so that the contours fray. Even when the paint is applied over a wide area, there are free areas. The background of the picture is often almost completely painted over, in some cases heavily shaded. Forms can be discerned in it, forms that emerge from the hidden. Collaged fragments of fabric that overhang the edge of the picture can be added as another layer. The artist lives and works in Rome.
