After completing his apprenticeship as a goldsmith and the Bielefeld School of Crafts and Applied Arts, Tümpel studied at the Staatliches Bauhaus in Weimar from autumn 1922. He was a student of Johannes Itten and Paul Klee and also worked in Oskar Schlemmer's stage workshop. In 1924, he was admitted to joining the Metal Workshop at the Bauhaus, headed at the time by László Moholy-Nagy.
