Mauritius Hergesell trained as an architect in the Vienna School of Arts and Crafts from 1901 to 1905 under Prof. Josef Hoffmann. The design for the fall front desk is strongly influenced by Hoffmann’s formal language as it was at the time. The execution of the piece was carried out in the workshop of his father Anton Herrgesell, a renown Viennese cabinetmaker who had his saleroom at one of the best addresses in Vienna, Am Stephansplatz 9, just opposite the main entrance to St. Stephan’s cathedral.
