Giuseppe Pisani was born in Carrara in 1757 and trained at the Accademia di Belle Arti in Florence, before moving to Rome where he was taken under the wing of Giuseppe Albani. Travelling with Albani to Vienna, he was introduced into the circle of Archduchess Maria Beatrice Vittoria d'Este who appointed him drawing tutor to her children, a post which was to earn him numerous commissions. When the Duchy of Modena was revived after the fall of Napoleon, Francesco IV named Pisani sculptor to the court and lecturer at the city's Accademia di Belle Arti, whose director he was to become in 1821.
