Rectangular gold box, early 19th century

Galerie Ouaiss Antiquités

Important rectangular hinged box in yellow gold with rounded edges, entirely lined with rectangular geometric motifs imitating wood marquetry, with perspective effects created by a play of chiselled lines on all sides of the rectangle. A clever effect of light and shade is remarkably successful. Friezes of stylized lotus flower motifs, punctuated by small rosettes on a sand-blasted background, form the frame of these geometric paintings on all sides. PARIS, 1798-1809.
Marked: old man's head with letters 8 and 5.
Rooster in oval 3, Paris 1798-1809
Master goldsmith : L.J (erased)
Control: Two eagle heads.
