A GEORGE II GILTWOOD SIDE TABLE IN THE MANNER OF MATTHIAS LOCK

An important mid 18th century carved giltwood side table in the manner of Matthias Lock having a replaced 18th century yellow sienna marble top with square edge above a bold egg and dart carved moulded edge with Vitruvian scroll below; on imposing cabriole legs with acanthus carved knees and scroll sides terminating in hairy paw and ball feet.

Note: Matthias Lock was one of the first designers and craftsmen in Britain to introduce rococo design. His publications predated the Chippendale director. Little is known about Matthias Lock himself but it is believed he worked alongside Chippendale on some of his larger projects. As a result the distinction between Lock and Chippendale is sometimes a little blurred. The distinct cabriole leg boldly carved with acanthus leaf compares to a drawing by Lock preserved in the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.
