A LARGE AND A SMALL SIDEBOARD
Bel Etage, Wolfgang Bauer, Vienna
Date 1904
Period 20th century
Origin Vienna
Medium Oak veneer on pine
Dimension 180 x 203 x 60 cm (70⁷/₈ x 79⁷/₈ x 23⁵/₈ inches)
Designed by: Josef Hoffmann, Vienna, 1904
Executed by: Wiener Werkstätte
Better than almost anyone else, Hoffmann understood how to concentrate on the function of a piece of furniture. Neither did he ever forget to employ materials of the very best quality material.
In their simplicity and exceptional proportions, our two sideboards are real pioneers of modern furniture construction. The Wiener Werkstätte opened its cabinet-making shop in 1904 but closed it again shortly thereafter because of commercial law problems with the neighbours. These sideboards are two of the very few pieces of furniture that were actually made on the WW premises.
The documentation in the WW archive in the Austrian Museum of Applied Arts in Vienna substantiates the fact that Hoffmann designed the two sideboards in 1904. Unfortunately, up till now, we have not been able to discover who ordered them.
