Yellow gold, round flat shape made of dark solid tortoiseshell with marbled tortoiseshell lining.
A gold-framed polychrome micromosaic (diameter 6.5 cm) with symbols of love is mounted on the lid.
Depicted on a terrain strip is a chariot of Cupid with a quiver and burning torch, along with a pair of kissing doves, framed by a surrounding millefiori border.
This very high-quality micromosaic is a typical example of early work from the Vatican workshops. The detailed depiction is created with very fine tesserae set in horizontal lines. Giacomo Raffaelli (Rome 1753–1836) was one of the finest hardstone and mosaic artists of his time. In 1787, he was appointed to the Council of Fine Arts by Stanislaus II Augustus, King of Poland; in 1804, he became the director of the Milan Mosaic Workshop and later returned to Rome as an advisor to the Russian Tsar.
