Stralsund
Date 1912
Period 20th century
Dimension 61 x 51 cm (24 x 20¹/₈ inches)
Woodcut on wove paper
Printed by Fritz Voigt, Berlin. Print # 1 of the portfolio "Elf Holzschnitte, 1912-1919, Erich Heckel bei J.B. Neumann", Berlin 1921.
The characteristic silhouette of Stralsund's old town is formed by a rich network of lines, rhythmically and excitingly arranged. The black sails of the boats moored in the harbor flutter in the wind and the sky stretches in spherical arcs over the gables of the city. The theme of light dominates many of Heckel's scenic woodcuts.
