A giltwood and gesso mirror

Ronald Phillips Ltd

Date circa 1720

Period George I

Origin English

Medium Giltwood

Dimension 129.5 x 72.5 x 13.5 cm (51 x 28¹/₂ x 5³/₈ inches)

Note: The frame retains virtually all the original gilding. The candle arms, including their sockets and raised mounting blocks, are of later date. The original bevelled mirror plate has been re-silvered at some stage.
Careful dry stripping by hand, removing later gesso and gilding layers, has revealed the frame’s delicate carved detail and the original gilding. The outlined quarter section in the detail image above has been left unrestored and shows the later gilding and gesso layers clogging up much of the carved detail.
