An Exceptional Regency Mahogany Library Armchair

Godson & Coles

Date 1810

Period 1750-1850, 19th century

Origin England

Medium Mahogany

Dimension 91 x 71 x 89 cm (35⁷/₈ x 28 x 35 inches)

This extraordinary chair combines scale, quality and attention to detail. The fact that the front and back legs are identically carved is highly unusual, the timber and the quality of the carving is second to none, and the overall design is highly accomplished.
Although the maker is currently unknown, many details point to a top London maker, such as Marsh and Tatham.

The upholstered back and seat flanked by finely carved scrolled arms and back support with ebonised beading and turned paterea ending in elongated scrolls. The similarly carved channelled rails with circular and oval paterea rasied on well carved legs with acanthus leaves, terminating in paw feet.
