Iznik-style Samson Bottle

This Iznik-style bottle is decorated in blue, turquoise and bole red paint with black outlining over a white slip, and is covered in a clear glaze. The bulbous body leads to a profiled shoulder and long neck, with a projecting boss accentuated by thin scrolling blue lines and dots. The body features large curving stems with blue flowers, alternating with pairs of stemmed blossoming red flowers.
The ceramics firm Samson, Edmé et Cie was established in Paris in 1845 by Edmé Samson. The firm produced ceramics inspired by, or directly copied from, museum pieces or examples from well-known European factories. Samson ceramics were sometimes signed using a variety of signatures, often stemming from a variation of the letter ‘S’. As with many other Iznik-style wares, this example bears the Arabic equivalent to the letter ‘S’. Additionally, it bears a second Samson signature resembling a curving letter ‘X’.
