Description & Technical information
Designed by: Otto Prutscher, Vienna, 1907, for Backhausen & Söhne, no. 6147
Executed by: most probably by Josef Backhausen & Söhne, Vienna
Average original condition, some heavy wear in places, some repairs.
The sample book of Backhausen & Söhne assigns the number 6147 to the design for our carpet and gives the designation "Smyrna A., Arch. Prutscher" though the size quoted is smaller size (238 x 318 cm). This would explain the minor differences in the execution of the two carpets.
Art nouveau carpets are very rare as most of them have been discarded or are much worn so that even though it is not in perfect condition this specimen is nevertheless a very decorative and important collector's piece.
We would like to thank Mr Peter Backhausen for his friendly help and for providing us with the documentation.
